PSYC 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: External Validity, Design Of Experiments, Internal Validity
Document Summary
Choose a question, formulate hypothesis, conduct a study, analyze the data, draw conclusion, publish. Allows us to distinguish what"s true effect and what we believe is true (like folk wisdom, intuition, anecdotes) Are we measuring what we think it"s measuring. The experiment is testing what we want to test. The results can be applied to other contexts. The variables are not manipulated, not controlled, we are simply measuring them. We are measuring how often does a kid watch violent tv and their aggression. But we are not forcing the child to watch violent tv. Do difference in the independent variables cause differences in the dependent variable. Cannot" randomly assign children to daycare and some not to. Less artificially; doesn"t force anyone to do anything. Hard to randomly assign participants to all group ethically. Follow a group of participants, and retested at another age. Research usually take a long time to study.
