Ranges from few days to few months. Depend on the health status of the preterm. Babies enter before development is ready for the external environment. Youngest is around 22 weeks and most unlikely to survive. Huge differences across where the babies are born. Not enough substances in the lung to sustain breathing. Long term as they grow up and develop. 2 -3 times more likely to stay at a hospital during childhood and even adolescent.
