There are two key elements that de ne the situation of the gospel: the philosophical identity and sense behind the ideational structure of the gospel, and the relationship between nascent christian faith and its jewish forbearers. Goulder"s overall hypothesis is that you need to bring the conversation about the controversy into play. He argues that mark, luke and john represent this controversy. The ideational landscape of the roman empire in the rst century is one that is the recipient of centuries of philosophical monotheism.
