Muhammad was the grandson of abdul al-muttalib a prominent leader in mecca, where muhammad was born in 570. He was the only child of parents who both died by muhammad"s fth birthday, initially leaving him in the care of his grandfather and then of his uncle, abu talib. As a teenager in the 580s and 90s, with his merchant uncle, muhammad began travelling to trade centres accessible from mecca. By the time muhammad is travelling, these powers are no longer in control.
