Document Summary
A term used to describe individuals and groups based on honour or prestige. High status: accompanied by privileges (legal, economic, interpersonal) Low status: involves withholding privileges and/or applying sanctions. Social status acquired on the basis of merit (opposite of ascribed) A primary identifying characteristic of an individual used to denote social position. 8 researchers with no mental health problems showed up to mental institutions complaining of hearing voices. Normal behaviour was read as indication of illness by hospital staff. A large number of real patients correctly identified them as imposters. Only allowed to leave once they admitted they were ill. Social status takes on a reality that we rarely question. We reproduce status inequality by distributing benefits & costs (belief, respect, etc. ) Inequality and status are reproduced through social interaction. Social closure (max weber): the practice of preserving privilege by restricting other people"s access to resources and rewards.
