Social change: transformation of culture & social institutions over time. May occur quickly (digital tech) or slowly (gender norms), & may be intentional (legalising abortion) or unintentional (effects of printing press) Collective action: voluntary, often spontaneous activity engaged in by large number of people. Often violates dominant group norms, often lacks institutionalised rules & procedures. Social movements: sustained challenges to existing holders of power in name of wronged population. Organised group that acts consciously to promote/resist change through collective action. "the crowd - a study of the popular mind" (gustave le bon 1895) Crowd is gathering whereby "sentiments & ideas of all persons/ / take one & same direction, & their conscious personality vanishes. " (le bon 2002:2) Suggestibility - more susceptible to persuasion (a figurehead) The nature of feelings & hence actions "depends on nature of suggestion to which crowd is exposed. / / doubtless crowd is often criminal, b/ also is often heroic" (le bon 2002: 9)
