Caring for sick children
• Coping with a severely ill child is extremely stressful

o Illness may cause dysfunction, but it can also strengthen family ties

Single parenting
• Single parent families can provide children with a significant decrease in conflict anxiety
and depression
• Single parents can have a harder time providing a higher quality of life
o Low income for many single mothers is a direct outcome of divorce
Parenting in poverty
• Families living in poverty face special challenges
o Parents unable to provide for basic needs, suffer low self-esteem and poor
mental health
o Children in low income families at higher risk for behaviour and cognitive
problems
o Disadvantages being passed from one generation to another
• Positive effects
o Stronger bond between parent and child
o Learning life skills
o Larger network of support
