Have to go to court to face abuser and etc. Measures verbal aggression and physical violence on a continuum. Ex of other items incl in the scale are use of a weapon, need for medical treatment, and involvement of a child. Term that incl both married and unmarried couples. Diff to estimate the extent of ipv due to varying definitions and hesitancy in reporting the abuse. Gender infl the type and severity of ipv w men committing more phys and mentally harmful acts. Previous experience of violence (previous exposure is the biggest factor)
