Future of ethnicity classification
• Gov’t uses the censes to record ethnic classification
o Use senses to make public policies, programs
o Ethnic classification is a political activity
• People are mobilising around race and ethnicity
o Want to make sure that they are classified properly
• Increasing immigration reignited need for classification which raises issues of diversity
and equality
• Classification labels have changed over time
o White label has always been an option
Multiculturalism vs diversity
• Aspinall (2009) states that diversity is more popular in British and American discourses,
while Canadians discourse is dominated by multiculturalism
• Multiculturalism has a political ring to it, so they use diversity
• Canadian census is more interested in cultural origin rather than race like the US
• One drop rule
o If you have one drop of black, then you are black
• Which concept do you believe is more meaningful in the 21st century?
