The chinese were recruited for mining industry late 1800s indentured labour. 1860s and 1870s - decreasing mine yields: european miners leaving + railroad. Have extremely low wage, below cost of living. 1885: an act to restrict and regulate chinese immigration into canada. Limit of one chinese person for 50 tons. 1923: only chinese allowed into canada are diplomatic corps, merchants and students. 1890: no working below ground or skilled jobs. 1893: not allowed/admitted into homes for aged and infirm. 1897: public works projects cannot hire chinese. 1899: chinese not allowed to hold liquor licenses. 1917: non-british subjects barred from working in civil service.
