Document Summary

About the study of language as a system. Meaning is created as a system to the whole, the study of language is a system or part of a system. Sign has two main components, signifier, signified-the concept. In theatre the interpreting is a key part of semiotics, to have something there to be able to interpret with signs are part of systems that are learned. No relation between the word and the objects, though we socially agree to calling an object by the name we do. Language system not only apply to verbal language/oral. Another language system includes gestures/light systems/sound systems- function as systems to create meaning. We train animals to learn a sign system. Denotation: the literal or common sense meaning of the sign. Connotation: socio-cultural and personal association of the signs, we think of its positive and negative associations. Everything on the stage functions as parts of a systems, and most of all working one system in another.
