VISA 183 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Marcel Duchamp, Impressionism, Nudity
Document Summary
Impressionists - originally rejected by academy of arts in paris. D jeuner sur l"herbe (1863) manet"s controversial painting that displayed nude contemporary women depicted next to well dressed men. Nudity wasn"t new but it was usually in reference to ancient classical figures, goddesses, etc. Not contemporary women (that looked like prostitutes). Postmodern: re-articulating the past, taking what already is and reorganizing it. Women in art should not look at us like that. In art, women should be demure, maternally, noble - always looking just in the other direction; never in our direction. Blank gaze, not a lot of emotion (flat) In the reflection we see her serving a top hatted man, which parallels the viewer"s role. She"s used to people looking at her; she"s like an object that"s involved with this commercial business. The work knows more than the artist does. One of the most influential works in the 20th century.
