The power of non-probabilistic techniques arises when they are used to generate purposive samples and promote theory. Convenience sampling is exactly what it sounds like you take whoever is available. Used in pilot studies and other types of exploratory research. Snowball sampling is the technique that becker eventually used in his work about marijuana users: you could argue that he started out with a purposive sample. Essentially, the researcher gets referred to potential subjects by participants. Quota sampling resembles stratified random sampling to a great degree. In order to do this, you need to know some things about the demographics of the research population.
