Document Summary

In 1859, charles darwin published on the origin of species by means of natural selection. Darwin made two points in the origins of species. The origin of species challenged a worldview that has been accepted for centuries. The greek philosopher aristotle viewed species as fixed and arranged them on a scala naturae. The old testament account of creation fortified the idea that species were individually designed and did not evolve. Theory of gradualism: major changes result from slow, but continuous, processes (e. g. canyon) Mechanisms of change are constant over time. Sedimentary rocks form when mud and sand settle to the bottom of seas, lakes, and marshes. New layers of sediment cover older ones, creating layers of rock called strata.
