Types of Argument
One sided
Only writers position
Biased
Persuasive if controversial/little knowledge
Effect
Multisided
Includes objections/alternative views
Dialogic
Still makes an argument
Logical flaw, inadequate support
Erroneous assumptions
Dialogic
Writer represents self as exploring or uncertain
-
Audience is a partner in the dialogue
-
Solution to the problem is "consensual"
-
Truth-seeking, less confrontational, more collaborative
-
Resists impulsive and superficial comments
-
Allows writer to spend considerable time with opposing views
-
More effective when the audience is totally resistant
-
Delayed-thesis argument allows you to explore the issue before settling on a
position.
-
Toulmin System (in ch4)
ENTHYMEME: depends upon an underlying assumption that the audience must
accept
Claim supported by reason using a "because statement"
GROUNDS: evidence that causes an audience to accept your reason. Facts,
data, stats, links, testimony, examples, anecdotes.
WARRANT: the underlying assumption.
BACKING: supports the warrant (to get the audience to accept)
QUALIFIER: limits the force of a claim.
Rogerian Communication
Focuses on mutual learning and growth, rather than persuasion.
-
Delays its thesis
-
Accepts a change in position
-
Empathetic listening to the other side
-
Effective for emotionally charged issues
-
Seeks common values between sides
-
Sometimes seen as manipulative, luring audiences to the writer's position
-
Textbook considers it to be dialogic inquiry
-
Exploration and reflection
-
Often an open letter or letter to a specific person with the hope of opening a
dialogue and finding a mutually acceptable solution.
