Content Motivation Theory: Focus on explaining and predicting behavior based on
employee need motivation
Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs
Two-Factor Theory
-maintenance - work environment ex. Salary, hours
-motivators - job itself: reason for doing the job, importance job has to
society, self-actualization needs
-motivators, not maintenance (ex. money only satisfies, it doesn’t motivate,
once you have money you no longer want to work)
Acquired Needs Theory
-people are motivated by their need for achievement, power and affiliation
-ach: responsibility, achievement
-pow: control
-aff: praise, teamwork
Process Motivation: focus on understanding how employees choose behaviors to fulfill
their needs, why and how different needs change + satisfy
Equity Theory
-want fair treatment
-no: anger, outrage
-people motivated when perceived inputs equals outputs
-ex. women want to be paid the same as a man for the same job (wage
gap issue)
Expectancy Theory
-people are motivated when they believe they can accomplish the task
(expectancy), will get rewards (instrumentality), rewards worth the effort
(valence/ value)
