Charismatic Leadership
-is not a leadership style; people have to believe that you are a charismatic leader
-Followers accept the leader’s vision not because of success but belief in the
extraordinary qualities of leader (Ex. people believe Trump is good at business,
but he’s been bankrupt).
Attributes of Charismatic Leadership: acts of heroism, Inspire, build confidence,
support revolutionary ideas, aura, oratorical skills (public speaking), lower status
quo
Locus of Charisma - What is the basis of charisma?
-Situation/ social climate facing the leader - under stressful situations,
charismatic leaders can express their sentiments
-The leader’s extraordinary qualities - Charisma is primarily the result of
leader attributes
-Combination of situation and leadership qualities
-Self-Glorification - protect, maintain, enhance self-esteem, negative; using
one’s own charisma to elevate themselves (ex. Trump, Hitler)
-Self-Transcendence - collective, altruistic, supportive, positive (ex. Mother
Theresa, Nelson Mandela)
Socialized Charismatic Leadership
-Very positive, Egalitarian, Self-transcendent, Empowering
-Benefit others, using power for the good of others, ideology above self
-Follower- centric - want to make the followers better, seeks to benefit
others
-ex. Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Jesus Christ
Personalized Charismatic Leadership
-Dominant, self-centered, narcissistic (in love with themself)
-Charisma for self-glorification, to increase the self, give glory to the self,
devoted to self, not ideals
-Exploitative, Leader-driven
Transformational Leadership
-not based on follower perception but based on accomplishments
-Changes status quo by articulating current problems and a compelling vision of
what a new organization could be
-Positive changes
-You want people to do the work but not be restricted by format
Qualities of Transformational Leadership: Higher ideals , Moral identity, Leader-focused,
Vision
-Long-term: looking where you are going to be in the future
