-How leaders form one-on-one relationships with followers
-Can create in-groups, out-groups
-Teachers’ favorites and non-favorites
Why it matters?
-Degree of latitude leader-follower
-Influences future behavior
-Different tactics, different members
-Ex. How you interact with a ten-year-old is different than how you interact
with a teenager
In-Group
-Strong social ties to leader, supportive relationship
-Trust, respect, loyalty, influence
-Note: not everything is given to you in an in-group but they can be helpful
-leaders pay close attention, offers support, feedback, and consideration to a
follower
-followers give exceptional performance to leader, willing to go the extra mile
Out- Group
-Few, no social ties
-Task-centered relationship
-Low exchange, Top-down relationship
-followers will only do requirements of the employment contract, receive little
inspiration, encouragement and recognition
Leader-Member Exchange (LMX)
-the quality of the exchange relationship between leader and follower
-Varies (high, low) ex. Quality of exchange with a certain student is high because
they have a debate over a topic with the prof instead of sitting quietly in the back
corner of a class
