AHSS*2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Ethnocentrism, Rob Ford
Week 11: Culture, Ethics and Diversity
Culture
-Beliefs, norms, attitudes, values, assumptions, ways of doing things
-Shared by members of organization
-Taught to new ones
-Culture has to be passed along
-Do classes have a culture? They run in different ways
-Is there a culture in kin? Don’t buy food on campus, bring it from home
Significance
-Why do you need culture? Brings people together when there is a problem, and it
gives people principles to draw upon
-Twofold
-Creates internal unity. People know how to respond
-Helps adaptation to external environments
-Coming to GH- the culture is to give students theory and practice to give
us an advantage when we graduate- we will be able to cope with
adaptation
-Why is critical thinking important? -problem solving, Ex. If you’re in media
and decide it’s not for you, if you can critically think, you can adapt to
another environment
Low Performance Culture (Weak)
-Insular thinking, closed minded
-Resistance to change
-Doing things out of your schedule when you have more important things to
do- run the city
-Politicized internal environments (fiefs)
-Unhealthy promotion practices (personal)
-Ex. Rob Ford was worried about coaching football, but he had a city of 3.5 million
people
High Performance (Strong)
-Value employees
-Results oriented (rewards, punishment)
-Excellence emphasized
-Reinforced tools (symbols, policies)
Obstacles to Diversity
1. Prejudice - unjust cause for opinion
2. Ethnocentrism - belief your group/culture is superior
3. Glass Ceiling - invisible barrier, separating women and minorities, leadership
