In this unit, we will be looking at the importance of media in growing the game. Technology had a huge effect on media and hockey. At the turn of the century, newspapers began to carry full sports sections with game reports and photographs of hockey stars . At the same time, the telegraph helped to keep newspapers up to date with hockey results. In the years leading up to the great depression, the nhl was busy building new ice palaces and elevating its appeal as to attract a wider audience, including women. Later, radio started a national conversation across canada. Radio helped many canadians as they struggled through the depression, one of the bleakest periods in canadian history. Canada was slowly becoming less a satellite of great britain and, with the advent of radio, was becoming far more influenced by americana.
