Historically, gender and sex were thought of as two separate concepts. Rigid binaries of male and female left little room for biological, psychological, or sociological alternatives to male or female. Many people will use the term gender and sex interchangeably and use them in the wrong context. Gender identity: the internal perception of an individual"s gender and how they label themselves.
