Document Summary

Note: the table on the last page is based on the last few slides of this lecture will be covered using an in-class activity. Tissues are collections of cells that work together to perform a specific function. Two or more tissues combined and functioning together form an organ. Cells, tissues and organs have distinct shapes (form fits function!) Extracellular matrix (ecm) and cellular junctions structural integrity of tissues or organs (adherence) In plants, cellular shape and adherence due to ecm important in cellular shape and adherence. General function the protein fibers of cytoskeleton provide internal support for cells. Cytoskeletal elements found in all eukaryotic cells have at least two cytoskeletal elements: microtubules, microfilaments. Note: animal cells have a third cytoskeletal element intermediate filaments. Usually, these polymers grow faster at one end than the other: plus end faster-growing end, minus end slower-growing end, positioning in animal cells. Minus ends are positioned at organizing center of centrosome.
