Stocks (pillory: branding, mutilation, (cid:272)old"s bridle. Cage inside the mouth that stuck to the tongue. If she moved her tongue it would torture her: punishment for adultery. Woman caught for adultery would have to chase a chicken naked across town: public execution. Society is included when punishing the individual: later intermediate/secondary punishment= banishment and hulks. More crime/ theft because people had more things. With increased number of hanging- people started to feel bad so found other forms of punishment. Banishment = sending people abroad (u. s. or australia) Hulk = retired military ship used to hold everyone. Need for secondary punishment: changes in attitude.
