October 30, 2012  Buying chocolate for all sections. Section 1 has 30 students, section 2 has 29, section 3 has 27 and section 4 has 23. Each student will receive 3 chocolates. Each bag contains 90 chocolates. How many bags are needed? 1. How many kids altogether? -> ADD -> 109 kids 2. Each kid wants 3 chocolates. How many chocolates are required? -> 327 chocolates 3. Each bag has 90 chocolates. Divide. -> 3.6 4. 3.6 isn't possible, so we need 4 bags. There will be candy left over.  For kids, division means fair share.  Place value o 27 = 20 + 7 o 29 = 20 + 9  40 + 16 = 40 + 10 + 6 = 56  Estimate o 30 kids means 90 chocolates -> 1 bag  So if there are classes with less than 30 kids, 1 bag will be enough -> each class gets 1 bag -> 4 bags altogether  15% of $100 = $100.00 $15 o So for $53.50, round to 50 o 50 is half of 100, so find the 'half' of 15 o 7.5  Give children problem solving questions that allow them to estimate.
