Made it legal to sterilize women who were mentally incompetent. When this was first implemented, indigenous people were not the target. In the 60s and 70s, federal government saw how expensive it was to build comprehensive house services in the north and recommended using this as a form of birth control to reduce costs. 1000s of indigenous women were reported sterilized in alberta and bc through this act. In the last number of years, 60 indigenous women had been force sterilized. Created significant medical distrust, decreased faith in health care, less care satisfaction, less treatment adherence, and decreased utilization of health care resources. Indigenous women who have gone missing and been murdered. A walk every february 14th throughout the country to honour and remember those who have gone missing or been murdered. In 2014, inuit and inuuk canadian, holly jarret started the #aminext . Calls attention to the high number of missing and murdered indigenous women.
