By the 60s, reserves had high death rates, high poverty rates, and poor socioeconomic status. Government was actively looking for homes for these children to be adopted to and even releases psas regarding it. Over 20 000 kids were removed from their homes. 70% were adopted out, all to non-indigenous homes. Children were sent as far as new zealand. Mothers were devastated about losing their children.
