To identify and explain types and functions of tort law. There are two types of torts: intentional and negligent. To identify the kinds of damages one may claim in tort and the types of defenses available. To identify and explain the tort of battery, how it differs from unintentional torts. To identify and explain the concept of the duty of care and how it relates to the tort of negligence. In some cases, several persons may have been involved in the wrongdoing; the liability for damages will be apportioned among the joint tortfeasors according to their degree of responsibility. Damages are supposed to bring the plaintiff into the position that she would have been but for the tort that has been committed. In addition to damages, plaintiffs may seek other remedies such as injunction (a court order that requires the defendant to stop doing something that damages the plaintiff.
