Power is: something that a person or organizations possesses and is willing to use. Power involves some sense of purpose or intention. We expect to meet some need or receive some benefits through the use of power (p. 90). Collaboration is one way those in power accomplish their objectives. Power sometimes implies resistance but can also be used in the spirit of cooperation. Power is situational and interactional: it is determined by the interplay of people and the context. A person must be willing to use power for the power base to be meaningful: power makes demands on those who use it, must ask the questions: How can you use privilege to further legitimate interests: understanding how power is rooted in community can shed light on how and why things happen. Possession of knowledge & ability to control information. Ability to influence the lives or behaviour of large groups.
