Document Summary

Neurophysiology the life of the neurons themselves. Action potentials can lead to information being passed between neurons. Change in that charge is what is called being polarized. Ions either having more protons (cations) positive charge. Or ions having more electrons (anions) negative charge. Ions are within the cell and outside of the cell. At rest not sending a signal to anything. There are special channels to pass these ions and in most cases they are closed. The only one that can pass through freely is the potassium ion. Sodium, chlorine, and calcium have a more difficult time. Both electrodes placed in the water, there is no charge, 0 potential difference. Placing one in water and one in the axon, it becomes negative. Ions only passed in and out when the channel is open. Some ion channels are gated signals. While the channel is opening, it is being selective in what is entering the cell (selective permeability)
