PSYC 1000U Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Central Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Week 3 notes january 26 2016 intro to psyc-the brain chapter 2. Midterm 1-60 multiple choice questions (chapter 1, 2, 6 and prologue) We are our brains: brain controls all our behaviour except for simple reflexes. Changes to genes, the brain, and/or hormones often result in observable behaviour differences (e. g. someone suffering a seizure) drugs can affect someone"s behavior as well) The nervous system is comprised of two major types of cells: neurons: cells that receive, integrate and transmit information (i. e. , permit communication). Features: soma (with nucleus), dendrites, axon, and myelin sheath, terminal branches. (responsible for processing info) neurons are communicators and communicate with other neurons to transmit info to the rest of the brain) Glial cells (glia): cells that support neurons (i. e. , support communication). They provide nourishment to neurons, remove waste products, and provide insulation around axons. (they play a role in learning and participate in the info process and memory)
