ANT 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Zygote, Probability Distribution, Y Chromosome
Document Summary
Lecture 4 heredity, evolution & human diversity. People used to believe that traits of offspring resulted from the blending of parental characteristics. Genetics the study of gene structure and action and the pattern of transmission of traits from parent to offspring. Genetic mechanisms are the foundations for evolutionary change. Cells are the basic units of life in all living things. Life on earth can be traced back (cid:885). 7 billion years to prokaryotic cells represented today by bacteria and blue-algae. Eukaryotic cells (cid:523)found in all multicellular organisms(cid:524) appeared (cid:883). (cid:884) billion years ago: contain organelles contained within a cell membrane, the nucleus is an organelle that contains chromosomes (cid:523)nuclear dna(cid:524) Chromosome organized structure of dna; found in the nucleus. Contain deoxyribonucleic acid (cid:523)dna(cid:524) and ribonucleic acid (cid:523)rna(cid:524) Dna contains the genetic code; rna helps with protein synthesis: nucleus is surrounded by the cytoplasm, which contains other organelles involved in various activities.
