The gametophyte was on top and attached to sporophyte underneath. In ferns, spores landed on ground turned into vegetative structure. Splash fertilization, zygote grew out of plant structure that disappeared. Gametophyte stage will internalize the sporophyte stage in later plants. There"ll be other reproductive structures to make the sperm.
