Document Summary

Bacteria grow by increasing their number of cells. Growth measurements monitor changes in the total number of cells or the mass of cells. Binary ssion is bacterial form of asexual reproduction. This occurs in steps: dna replication, cellular elongation, septum formation, septum completed and cell wall formation, cellular separation and nally the creation of daughter cells. The quantity of all molecules doubles: proteins, dna, rna, lipids for membranes, cell wall materials, etc. Everything is distributed almost equally between the two daughter cells: growth in batch cultures. In a closed system, there is no addition of new nutrients and no elimination of waste products. Cells are not withdrawn (ie. production of yogurt, beer fermentation, blood infection) and cell density increases until something becomes limiting. Bacteria assess what media is, what environmental conditions are, what is needed to grow in this condition.
