Cancer is 2nd cause of death, 1/3 of that is atributed to cigarete smoking. 1st cause of death is heart atack, 1/3 of heart atacks caused by cigaretes. 3rd cause of death is cerebrovascular diseases, also caused by tobacco. Tobacco kills 420,000 per year in north america. Naives drank smoke from tobbagos (rolled up tobacco leaf that was lit) First shipments of tobacco to spain was from tobago. Tobacco smoking was in clubs, a social thing. Water pipes- popular in eastern countries, smoke is bubbled through water and removes some of the acids. People didn"t smoke that much, it was expensive. Bonsack machine reduced producion cost, made it widely available to public. Flue curing heated and dried tobacco in a shorter ime span and reduced the harshness of the smoke. Machine manufacturing reduced cost and now everyone could smoke. Flue curing reduced irritants in smoke, so smoke was brought deeply into the lungs.
