Document Summary

[cu(h2o)4]2+ (aq) + 4 nh3 (aq) [cu(nh3)4]2+ (aq) + 4 h2o (l) Initial observation: 0. 1 m cuso4 is a light blue, clear liquid, no odour, nh3 is a colourless, clear liquid, strong odour, 1 m hcl is a colourless, clear liquid. Experimental observations: cuso4 + nh3 forms semi-transparent, dark blue/indigo liquid solution, solution + hcl forms a light blue, slightly cloudy liquid similar to the original 0. 1 m. Cuso4: solution + nh3 forms previously seen semi-transparent, dark blue liquid, solution + hcl turns solution to a clear light blue liquid with small layer of dark blue liquid on surface. In this system at equilibrium, a single displacement reaction takes place between the cu2+ and nh3. The addition of the nh3 ion causes the original cuso4 liquid to become dark blue solution. This is because according to le ch telier"s principle, a reaction moves in the direction that minimizes the effect of any change on the system in equilibrium.
