CMN 1148 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Selective Perception, Standpoint Theory, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
Perception: process of sensing, interpreting, and reacting to the physical world. 7 characteristics of perception: perception is learned and backward looking: All of the sense have a learned dimension. Our past experiences and expectations influence what we perceive (backwards looking: perception is culture bound and racially biased. Culture exerts a powerful influence on our perceptions. Perceptions of pain vary throughout world (ex: labour/birth) Own race bias: we are more accurate in identifying members of our own race than people of other races (notice subtle differences) Ex: white north american all asians look the same - racist, suggests no differentiating characteristics. *diversity/immigration can help decrease own race bias: perception is selective and self-serving. Selective perception is the process by which we see and retain certain kinds of information while ignoring or discarding other kinds of information. The novel or new (stuff we haven"t seen before) Intense stimuli (really loud, really bright, fast-moving; anything outside of normal speed/colour/volume)
