Symbol- something that stands for something else. Referent- object or idea to which a symbol refers. Thought- mental image we associate with the symbol/referent. *note, thought can vary based on the individual. Connotative, a personal meaning based on individual experiences. Phonological rules- rules governing how sounds combine to form words (ex. Syntactic rules- rules governing how we arrange words and punctuation or other symbols, punctuation can influence meaning. Semantic rules- rules dealing with the agreed-upon and shared meaning of words that may differ across time periods, cultures, and by personal experiences (ex. Beaver tail, pastry or body part of animal) Pragmatic rules- rules that take context into account in arriving at meaning. Example- meaning of take your clothes off depends on who is asking (doctor, lover, stranger) Some words only exist in some languages. Some say language determines how we see the world. Social media has developed many new words such as unfriend, tweet, hashtag.
