The concept of data is broadly cast. Acts as a chronological record of what was observed. Subject to the situation and researcher role. Cannot document the variety of nonverbal behaviours. Cannot be playing the recordings for others or sharing them. This is to maintain anonymity and ethical standards. Respondent validation: once interview has been recorded and transcription is made, making sure you are describing word for word to ensure accuracy. You can ask the interviewee to read the transcript. Interviewees are able to correct any error or challenge interpretations. Can be costly time and resource wise. An easy way to ensure this is to ask a last question in the interview or focus group that would allow participants to express their opinion. After each question you can paraphrase and ask if that is okay. Focus is on people and their interaction. Speech communities are decided by groups of people who agree on a specific way of communicating.
