Incarceration as Senseless
Imprisonment as punishment or as rehabilitation?
Resonance: msgs don’t always resonate (guards teachers)
By attending programming it’s not like the msgs are gonna resonate anymore
Under new rehabilationism merged new ideas with targeting how risky we feel
they are
Incarceration and Respect
Expectations formally stated
If you’re a model prisoner = citizen
Expectations of inmates isn’t the same as the behavior of guards (hypocrisy)
Some inmates said that there are some bad guards but
Examples saying your useless to society, they’ll smash you against the wall
Ex. “if you’re gonna fuckin’ swear go to your fuckin’ room”
The expectations are way higher and stringent than we even expect of ourselves
Inconsistent application of rules + lack of objectivity (pick faves)
Arbitrary; ad hoc
Infantalizing discources esp. in women’s institutions
Juveniles called boys; women called girls
Creates narratives around individs that suggests their dep. But also incapable
Guards not held accountable for actions the way inmates are
Incarceration and Visitation
What emerges after ppl have done time for a long time is that in order to cope with
the pains of imprisonment, they manufacture a protective self that helps them get
through (non-contact visits)
Said it brought alienation; you create walls around you so you don’t feel it so
By ppl serving more time, who felt human contact would serve as detriment
to successfully completing sentence
Self-rehabilitationism: that’s how ppl are coming in and we want to change you
and be more open to ppls feelings etc. and you will be able to successfully
reintegrate in society
Incarceration is helping them create more boundaries and walls; less vulnerability
Irony: correctional system creating (or at least reinforcing) what it’s attempting to
Hawlsey: ppl who have families on the outside are less likely to recidivate
**The Transgressional Self
Summarizing it all
Individ transgressed law
Rather than remaking someone who is law abiding, incarceration just confirms to
the person that they are an offender

Prison is the medium (one more way of depriving them) through the
exaserbation of deprivation rather than the means of deprivation
Sykes deprivation model: you get offender groups and types cuz we put them in jail
and deprive them of those 7 things
Erwin and cressy: failed to account for the fact that they’re not blank slates going in
They’re importing values that impelled them to criminality, into prison with
Hallsy: all incarceration does is further deprive ppl when they’ve been deprived for
It reinforces that they’ll be deprived on the way out and they’ll have to fall
back on skills they had going in cuz they didn’t learn anything
“Offender” self-identity what individs export from prison, is what they knew prior
to going in, that they need to fall back on their skills as an offender in order to
***What’s the rhetoric for prison vs. the reality of prison (incongruous demands)
PAGE 362
When prisoners learning to cope vs. rhetoric of correctional officers (they
don’t match up)
We’re supposed to find prison a deterrent when some find it better than being on
the outside
In no other institute in society would we continue to do something this wrong
Prison Masculinity As Adaptation
Why certain groups and prisoners are the way they are
It’s not one it’s not the other, it’s a mix of both
The pains of imprisonment create another identity, what type of masculinity do they
In prison, hyper masculinity becomes the ideal way of exemplifying your maleness
Certain prisoner identity is for reasons that you lose some sense of autonomy
Similar to Hallsy: prisoner identity is one characterized as weak and dependent
The things in our Western society that constitute our men as men
(toughness) prison is depriving you of the opportunities to reinforce their
masculinity in conventional ways
End up overexaggerating certain aspects of being a man
Behavioral and aesthetic diffs btw men and women
Traditionally we assume they derive from biological sex (problematic)
Unconsciously engage in activities that will confirm the sex category of male or
When you’re doing gender you’re making visible what’s invisible
Boobs can be fake, gender becomes how we exemplify to other ppl
It’s not something one is, it is something one does in interaction with others
Normative Gender: normative/ideal ways of doing gender are characterized by
hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity
Hegemony: systems of thought (cultural systems, etc) that we all come to
accept as being natural and inevitable
