Prison"s have become profitable and money is more important than anything else. Traced the emergence of the prison to capitalist imperatives. Prison serves as a means of instilling in prisoners the discipline, and obedience required of productive workers. Prison operated as a means of controlling the lower classes whose actions threatened the existing social economic order. He believed it was because of political and social interests. The removal of physical pain: modern punishment body seeks to cause less bodily hurt and looks more to deprive someone of liberty". Punishment becomes more private hidden from public gaze. The act of punishment becomes more abstract to us. It is easier to justify the responsibility for punishment away from the state. The responsibility for curing the criminal becomes dispersed among several bureaucratic agencies. Think of punishment as a complex social function that produces effects through society. View punishment as a political tactic, a way of enacting power.
