Telling a story" with penal strategies: simple imagery severe discipline, hierarchical power, shame/humiliation, coercive force. These are the things that society does to indicate that someone is an other": nostalgically symbolic methods. There is a consensus amongst all of these theorists that we have on some level moved away from the goals that we used to have under penal modernity. We have not shifted away completely, there is still some talk about wanting to rehabilitate people.
