Nightingale took 38 nurses to the crimean in 1854 (14 protestant nuns, 10 roman catholic nuns, 14 professional nurses). 11 nurses did not return from the crimea: died from diseases. During her first winter 4,077 soldiers died there; 10x more soldiers died from illnesses such as typhus, typhoid, cholera and dysentery than from battle wounds.
