Lecture 5 cells & their environment (sept 21) Anything that sits outside of the cell. Cell communicates w/ this through integral proteins that are on the cell membrane. Portion of protein spans membrane and portion extends into cellular compartment. Having extracellular proteins totally changes what a cell is capable of doing. Carb or sugar type projection sitting off proteins linings membrane. Often looking to interact w/ these sugar groups. Mediates cell to cell contact, cell to substratum. Protective barrier lines gi tract, acts as buffer against pathogens. Net, catches diff growth factors circulating and brings into contact w/ receptors sitting on membrane. Surface open which cells sit on (so they are not free floating) Any cell requiring information of where a lumen is vs where the rest of the body is. White (cid:271)lood (cid:272)ells (cid:272)learly do(cid:374)"t need it b/c they circulate through the body. Very important basement membrane if dysfunctional can result in kidney failure.
