Acts as lung, stomach, liver and colon. Villous tree= maternal-fetal exchange region of placenta. Mo(cid:373)"s (cid:271)lood gets du(cid:373)ped i(cid:374)to a sa(cid:272) that (cid:271)athes the trees i(cid:374)side the placenta. All cells in the placenta are called trophoblast cells. 2 structural compartments: villous trees (cytotrophoblasts which act as stem cells that can terminally differentiate; and the syncytiotrophoblast which is a big sac full of nuclei, important layer because its fetal genetics interacting with maternal blood) Fetal genetics carrying mom and dad genetics, fetal genetics does thi(cid:374)gs to hide itself fro(cid:373) (cid:373)other so the (cid:373)o(cid:373) does(cid:374)"t atta(cid:272)k the(cid:373) (foreign substance) Also extra-villous compartments: invade uterine wall trying t find the blood vessels; then they remodel the vessels (small, lots of smooth muscles), remove the muscle and replace the endothelial lining. Gives you uterine wall that is lined with fetal cells.
