HSS 2321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Polychlorinated Biphenyl, Water Pollution, Soil Retrogression And Degradation
Document Summary
Environmental hazards in the air, water, and land have increased tremendously over the last century. Like other health threats, environmental hazards are unequally distributed. The poor and people from lower ses groups are more likely to be affected by environmental hazards. More blue collar workers more exposure to work-related hazards. Poorer, less-developed countries are unequally subject to the destructive effects of environmental degradation. Rainforest countries have lots of damage done in their environment: obesity. Less access to healthy food, more access to fast food. Less access to sports and facilities and services. Possibly genetics in the geographical region: asthma. Environmental factors: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dental decay, diet, high fat foods cheaper, decrease in exercise, high blood pressure. Lack of resources (and education) to see a dentist. Climate change is currently one of the most critical environmental issues. Climate change results in part from the burning of fossil fuels, which produces carbon dioxide.
