Nursing in one form or another has always been available for sick people, even if it was only unskilled help with feeding, etc. Nursing usually was women"s work an extension of domesic responsibiliies. The rise of chrisianity led to the disincive roles for nurses. Healing and caring for the sick came to be thought of as acts of chrisian charity, and nursing became a full-ime occupaion for the sisters of the church. Nursing sisters worked for the church as well as for medical praciioners. Nurses are a fundamental part of the modern medical care system (largest sector) Hospitals, community clinics, long-term care insituions, home-care organizaions, and many doctors" oices. Nurses and nurse praciioners are oten responsible for the health of remote communiies on a day-to- day basis. The duies of the hospital nurse are extremely varied and specialized.
