21 views2 pages

Document Summary

Determinism: everything a person does is predetermined by outside factors that are out of their control. Therefore, because it is not their fault, they do not believe in punishment as retribution (because no human deserves praise or blame) Instead they use punishment as deterrence and correction, which is similar to punishment for young children and animals. Deterrence: so they know that doing certain things will have consequences. Treating human beings the same as you would animals is disrespectful/ dehumanizing. Retributive punishment respects persons as moral agents. Can be seen as a way of avoiding responsibility. Says i can"t help what i do . In the moment i must see myself as free because i must make decisions. We associate individual responsibility with right wing politics. Reagan says to stop blaming society for people who commit crimes. Whether our acts are up to us, as long as they are not externally impede. Also does not mean political or social liberty.
