Why study: politics is a vital part of life. Helps reduce conflict because large groups of people have differing views. Makes decisions that try to benefit society by reducing conflict. Politicians have unique, tough job: helps understand surroundings. How do we deal with others: organizes people in social environments. What is politics: the study of power; conflict and resolution. Politics must allocate resources, consider best avenues to please many: associated with many negative connotations. Politicians are pigs, scapegoats; politics is a lie, act of corruption, unnecessary, etc. Limited, distributed unequally, divides social strata into rich and poor: decisions enforced by laws, military; not natural relationship and affects social relations. Sub-fields of political studies: political philosophy study of ideologies, political institutions political regimes, states, rulers, political culture, behavior, and socialization how people think and act politics. International politics relations between states: public policy processes and decisions of government, public administration bureaucracy, political economy relationship between politics and economics.
