Much the same reason as britain: economic, resources, project power, protect what french conquered, civilizing mission (white man"s burden) whare the superior culture with the rest of the world (ideological, see themselves as a world empire. 3rd republic: parliamentary regime with a weak executive. French ppl weren"t ready to accept that. 4th republic: monopoly of power in the parliament, french government were voted out every 6 months, ill equipped to deal with crisis. Large of the french people go to algeria; its part of the national entity that"s french. Large muslim arab majority does like is and in 1954 they rebel. French has just lost indo china empire and faced with another bloody war.
