Document Summary

Use distributed (spaced) practice: cramming works for short-term recall, but not for long-term recall; can also interfere with earlier learning. Make material meaningful: attach concepts to visual images. Use active retrieval cues: recall where on a page a concept is located. Minimize interference: don"t study lots of different things/subjects at once. Key attributes of memory: learning that has persisted over time, info that has been stored over time, info that can be retrieved over time. Memory is a process, not a storage device. Memory processes: encoding: getting info (feelings, thoughts, etc. ) into memory, storage: retaining info from memory, retrieval: recalling/using previously encoded and stored info. 3 stage model of memory: sensory input from environment recorded as fleeting sensory memory, information is processed in short-term/ working memory, information is encoded into long-term memory for later retrieval. This model shows that some info enters long-term memory without passing through first 2 stages.
